Martin Ward
Solid State Research Instrument Scientist
University of Strathclyde
Martin is responsible for the delivery of solid-state research projects and also the development of new solid-state capabilities within CMAC labs for materials characterisation and solid-state screening. Martin’s interests include solid form screening, polymorphism, mechanochemistry, multicomponent materials (salts, cocrystals, hydrates) and x-ray diffraction (single-crystals, and powder).
Martin gained in degree in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh and his PhD, also from the University of Edinburgh, in laser-induced crystal nucleation. Having previously worked in a pharmaceutical CRO Martin gained experience in commercial solid-form screening work and associated materials characterisation. Following this he took up a position at the University of Strathclyde that involved the discovery of new solid forms of pharmaceutical materials. This also allowed him to explore the use of traditional solid form screening methods as well as new approaches including mechanochemistry (ballmilling) and the use of high pressure conditions.
